Ground Water Hydrology
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (September, 1980)
Author: David Keith Todd
Average review score:

Groundwater Hydrology
This is a really good book covering a lot of the basics of groundwater hydrology. It covers occurrence, movement, well hydraulics, water wells, environmental influences, quality, and pollution, modeling subsurface investigations. A little outdated but can be used as a great complement to other more recent publications.

Essential Basic Reference
In spite of its age, this book continues to be an essential basic reference on the subject. Well organized and clearly written, the authors stated goal was "to present the fundamentals of groundwater hydrology in a manner understandable to [a wide variety of students and professionals]." If I were suddenly called to work in a foreign country and could only take one book, this would be the one. A slight drawback is the use of metric units throughout, perhaps because the book was expected to be translated into a number of foreign languages. This is the completely rewritten second edition of the original edition published in 1959. The first edition of this book was probably the first fundamental textbook on the subject. Basic information or equations that are not in Todd, usually can be found in "Groundwater" by Freeze and Cherry (John Cherry was a student of Todd's).

GREAT BOOK FOR CHILDREN
This book is by far the best children's book about witches and magick that I have ever had the pleasure of sharing with my children. If you are sick of your children coming home after school and watching TV or playing video games then this book will surly get them reading instead. If you are familiar with the movie Hocus Pocus, this book follows basically the same plot line but not really. It does have some twists and turns along the way. I recommend this book for all those young readers out there in BookWorld.

Best book ever
This is a story about three witches that try to take childrens souls to live longer. The witches are the Sanderson sisters.they are very mean.Thay try to chase poeple.

iMovie 2 for Dummies
Published in Paperback by For Dummies (15 February, 2001)
Author: Todd Stauffer
Average review score:

I like it
I like the way the book is written and it's style. It is informative and comprehensive and details the commands and all the operation from installation to making your movies. Covers all the features and much more including getting edtra plugins, movie management, memory issues and much more. The only part I though confusing is the wording in the section on cropping your movie. Very misleading these operations don't seem to , in part , work the way the books says. While the book has good instructions and visuals, I wished it would have included more screen shots and possibly highlight the commands it mentions in the visuals through arrows or something. I also wished the book covered about doing and creating movies longer then a few minutes. It covers movies but does not say anything about movies of any length other then more you make the nmore room it takes up. I like it . If you have imovie you will find it useful.

Includes a good CD demo
I have two other iMovie2 books, but I put out the money for this one because not only does it contains quite a few other techniques not found in other books, but because the attached CD comes only with sample movie clips of camera and editing techniques discussed in the book. It also includes among other things shareware and demo software like Adobe After Effects, sound effect utilities, graphic converter, MoviEffects to use with QT movies.

I wouldn't say this is the best iMovie2 book, but the author does a good job outlining, laying out, and explaining editing procedures and techniques. It's not that iMovie2 is a difficult program to learn or use, but it's just that books like these provide insightful strategies that enable you to get more out of the program. I certaintly recommend this book for first time and intermediate users of iMovie2.

The Insanity File: The Case of Mary Todd Lincoln
Published in Paperback by Southern Illinois Univ Pr (Trd) (February, 1993)
Authors: R. Gerald McMurtry and Mark E., Jr. Neely
Average review score:

M.T.L. -- eccentric or ill?
This book does not definitively answer the question whether the involuntary commitment of Mary Todd Lincoln subsequent to the assassination of her husband was just. It does portray Robert Todd Lincoln, the only surviving son of MTL, who initiated the proceedings, in a light more favorable than any previous biography to analyize the event.

As a person who works in the area of mental health law in the State of Illinois, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource in understanding the history of mental health law as it has evolved in this state. That said, there are instances in which legal terms are misused or misinterpreted by the authors, which leaves some question as to the authoriativeness of the opinions they express.

This is largely a work of history. As such, it animates the colorful characters involved in the insanity trial and the developments in the years prior. This is far more interesting any fiction I have read, and its historical basis makes it helpful in considering how we treat family members and the mentally ill today.

A REAL EYE-OPENER
With patience, and believe me it's worth it, you will discover the basic truths regarding Mary Todd (her supposed insanity) and her relationship with her eldest and only surviving son Robert (who had her institutionalized). This is a fantastic story of not only the legal mindset of the day regarding medicine, pyschology and women, but a story of a family that deeply cared for each other yet found it nearly impossible to express that love. Based on a large packet of notes and letters hidden away by Robert Todd Lincoln in his Manchester, Vermont home and subsequently discovered by his grandson Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith in 1980, this is hands-down the most factual account you will find anywhere, well documented with footnotes and references galore. Alas, Beckwith (the last of the Lincolns) is dead, but his decision to allow publication of this very private material was based on the fact that if Robert had not want it to be known he would have burned the packet rather than hiding it away for future discovery. If you want more gossip about the Lincolns, this is not the book for you. If you want a clearer understanding of who this great lady Mary Todd and her son Robert Todd Lincoln were, this is the only place you'll find it.

Into the Badlands (Harlequin Superromance, No. 1053)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harlequin (April, 2002)
Author: Caron Todd
Average review score:

Ancient history and contemporary danger - Highly recommended
Paleontologist Susannah Robb makes the short list for the recently vacated position of head of dinosaur research, but her nemesis wins the position. She met Alexander Blake thirteen years ago when she was in Australia on her first quarry. Alex had been an assistant to the leader of the joint Canadian-Australian dig, and his assessment of her performance had left her with a bitter taste. Her distaste for pop paleontology, when history takes a backseat to entertainment, has continued Susannah's dislike for Alex's work. Her own dry, pedantic papers may lack his flair, but at least they give credit where credit is due.

No one on staff knows that the board of directors awarded Alex the position as head of research because of his background in investigating stolen artifacts. Soon Alex finds himself torn between duty and desire. Further, Alex possesses an aura of energy and strength that makes him extremely likeable to everyone but Susannah. Yet shortly after arriving at his new position, he finds himself drawn to the very woman who seems intent on brushing him off. But Alex's attempts to help Susannah are blocked at every turn, and he finds himself sorely challenged to get close to her. Worse, as long as she is one of his suspects, Alex dare not act on his attraction.

Author Caron Todd presents a fascinating setting for INTO THE BADLANDS. Her love of paleontology lends the novel a vivaciousness and originality that readers will appreciate. In addition, Alex comes alive with an irresistible sexiness. Susannah is a bit harder to like, however, with her extreme prickliness. Yet her genuine concern for children, to the degree that she puts her own safety on the line to rescue a boy from a sinkhole, reveals a gentler, kinder side. While their romance is slow to kindle, the ensuing fire and conflict of the second half of the novel proves to be quite engaging. An entertaining read, INTO THE BADLANDS comes highly recommended.

Archaeology Comes Alive
Caron Todd's INTO THE BADLANDS combines fascinating archaeological detail with fast-paced drama and a satisfying romance.

Paleontologist Susannah Robb feels she is a shoe-in for the position of head of dinosaur research at the Alberta museum. When she loses the position to Alexander Blake, a man she worked with years before at an Australian dig, she is hurt. Not only is Blake unlike her predeccessor, he was critical of her work. She, in turn, feels he doesn't give credit where it is due and is trying to turn the museum into an entertainment center. Their working relationship is complicated by her unwanted attraction to the handsome director.

Blake is there to discover who has been poaching fossils, and from his vantage point, everyone is suspect, even Susannah. He finds her fascinating, but can he trust her?

This is a delightful story of thwarted attraction in a unique setting. Secondary characters are well drawn and add vibrance to a well-crafted story where everyone is suspect until the last few pages. Ms. Todd's rich prose and yummy hero will make you want more from this promising new author. Highly recommended.

Java Data Access: JDBC, JNDI, and JAXP
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (15 December, 2001)
Author: Todd M. Thomas
Average review score:

Excellent for JDBC, Poor for JNDI and JAXP
I came to Amazon looking for good books on JNDI and JAXP. So when I found this book that was supposed to cover both of these topics, I was quite pleased and bought it. Unfortunately, what I found out is that there is one chapter on JNDI, one chapter on JAXP, one chapter on EJB, and the other 16 chapters are on JDBC. I found the JNDI coverage to be acceptable, but certainly very short, and lacking in some areas. I found the JAXP coverage to be almost useless.
Although I know JDBC well, I figured I might as well read the rest of the book to recover some value from my purchase. I was surprised to find that the JDBC chapters were excellent. I learned many new things that I did not know about JDBC. Overall, I would say that this is the best JDBC coverage I've seen in any book.
So, if you're looking for a JDBC book I believe you'll be extremely pleased with this book. For just the JDBC section, I would give the book a perfect 5 rating.
However, if you are looking for a JAXP or JNDI book I believe you will be quite disappointed. For those topics I would give the book a 2 rating.

An Effective Tutorial, a Solid Guidebook, and a Great Read
When I pulled this book off the shelf, it just felt right, like all the pieces I needed were there. I'd been looking for a JDBC-type book for some time, but I didn't want a simple quick reference that left me wondering how to code for applications. I also didn't care to sift through a 1,000-page API reference in order to understand what JDBC was all about. This book is something completely and impressively different.

This is not a book for newcomers to the Java language, though I suspect anyone who's developed in Java will be able to follow along quite well. In fact, it's the author's writing style that makes learning JDBC almost effortless. The examples are numerous, easy to follow, and largely independent. However, the author frequently ties the concepts together nicely and it's plain to see how the examples may be incorporated into larger applications. I like that approach.

Another thing I especially appreciated was the author's effort to provide useful tips for solving real-world problems. In many cases, Todd provided an example implementation, but would describe cases where such an implementation may not be the most appropriate solution. Then, he would either give a short description of what to do instead or provide a snippet of code. That's a mark of a good instructor.

Other enjoyable and extremely useful parts of the book include patterns for implementation, discussion of JDBC data types and how they may differ for some databases, attention to the use of result set meta data, overview of EJB and JDBC uses, and various means for connecting to data sources including JNDI and LDAP. There's even a complete framework for wrapping JDBC calls within application logic. All of this is presented in the context of JDBC 2.0 and 3.0 and Todd clearly defines the version differences as they relate to implementation where appropriate.

I must point out that a few of the chapters were written by contributing authors, specifically chapters 15, 17, 18, and 19 (from what I can tell). These chapters are less related to JDBC itself but do concern the topic of "data access;" though, you may find that these chapters naturally have a somewhat different feel.

I can hardly imagine buying another JDBC book because I believe I've found most, if not all, of what I need. With great authors like Todd teaching us, we'll all end up experts!

Life for a child with Epidermolysis Bullosa
Bryon has Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa... the same exact condition my son has. RDEB is a rare skin disorder where the skin is so fragile a minimum scratch causes 2nd degree burn-like wounds, it is a devastating condition with no cure that does not improve with age.
In this book Lillian describes in detail her life with Bryon from birth and beyond. It was a tough book to read because of the vivid images it brought to me, but a must to read for any EB parent and their loved ones.

Here's a biography of faith that will make your heart glad..
"The heartwarming story of a small boy's rare courage and struggle with a rare skin disease that has caused pain and suffering for Bryon since birth. His story of strong faith in God's love is a lesson for all of us. His cheerful disposition is a tremendous contrast to the severity of his condition. When you read this story, you will realize that in the midst of sorrow, God alone can draw the sting out of every trouble and take the bitterness from every affliction." This is a wonderful book and you will be touched by it's story and how it will change your own outlook on life.
